VANCOUVER – A bear named ‘Panda’, not a panda bear, was safely trapped by Conservation Officers and RCMP on Friday morning and will be relocated.

Panda, a two-and-a-half year old black bear, was first spotted hanging out in a tree at the corner of Campbell Avenue and 1st Street in Revelstoke. Panda was quite happy to stay there sleeping and although Conservation Officers hoped he would head back into the mountains, he decided he liked his tree too much.

So something had to be done to move the bear.

Classic Towing, equipped with their flat deck and carrying a donated mattress from Eco Cents, parked strategically underneath the tree.

While the Revelstoke volunteer Fire Department and Revelstoke RCMP helped keep the curious spectators at a safe distance, Conservation Officers Terry Myroniuk and Michael Richardson were able to hit Panda with two sleeping darts. He then slid out of the tree and on to the bed.

Panda was carefully moved into the conservation truck and was whisked away by officers for assessment.

BC Conservation Officers and the Revelstoke RCMP want to remind the public that bears, such as Panda, can be unpredictable and dangerous to the public. This particular bear likely wandered into town seeking fruit from the trees and found a place to sleep.

They are asking the public to keep bears away from the community by storing garbage in sealed containers and ensuring the fruit is picked from trees.
