Unusual road hazard on Sarcee Trail

It’s an unusual hazard, to say the least – and it’s causing havoc for Calgary drivers.

An underground stream that runs along a hilly stretch of Sarcee Trail occasionally overflows.

And when it freezes, it causes traffic mayhem on the hilly road.

Such was the case during the morning commute on Friday, when a truck travelling up the hill hit an icy patch and rolled.

It ended up on its wheels in the middle of the boulevard.

People in the area say they’ve seen it before.

“(It’s) not the first time this has happened we actually had people who worked at this clinic who had a rollover themselves going up the hill.” . says Alex Nowoselski. The city is aware of the problem.

“We do know there is a naturally-occurring spring at that location that runs down along Sarcee Trail”, says City of Calgary roads spokesperson Jessica Bell.

But Jessica Bell says there’s no easy solution.

“If we make the ditch deep enough it doesn’t overflow as often.  But what happens is obviously debris and things get in the ditch and then we have to go in and dig it out again”.

“We’re looking into the different options – it’s just kind of a tricky spot”, adds Bell.

The city says crews will also be monitoring the road at least once a week once the snow flies.

The city says once the snow starts to fly — crews will be on the hill almost every week trying to keep the road clear and free of any ice.
