Mission homeowners suing district because their homes are sinking

VANCOUVER – Three families in Mission say they’re dealing with a homeowner’s nightmare and they blame the local district.

Their homes are sinking, something they say is endangering them and their children, and raising the prospect of losing their investments in their homes.

The problem is the houses were built on poor fill, which tests show is silt and sand mixed with wood debris and garbage.

There was also an old drainage culvert under the homes.

The homeowners say the District of Mission should never have approved the lots for construction and they are suing.

“I fear for our lives everyday,” said homeowner Emaleen Bridger.

Her partner, Scott Geisser added that it is really scary when you have children. “The thing you want to do is always protect your child and I can’t give my children 100 per cent protection because I’m in a sinking box with doors opening and closing and soil eroding. I can’t give my children 100 per cent protection and I can’t even move them out of this environment.”

The district of Mission says it cannot comment on the homeowners’ accusations because the dispute is before the courts.
