Residents of Grandview Village remain out of their homes following Sunday’s water main break that flooded the underground parking garage. Crews worked tirelessly Wednesday afternoon, removing 91 cars from the flooded basement, many of which are damaged beyond repair.

The damage extends far beyond vehicles. Stairways, the parking garage and boiler room were all flooded, and President of the Grandview Village condo association Wayne Schellhorn knows there’s plenty of work ahead.

“It’s just a horrendous amount of damage it did. Right now we don’t have a good potable water supply, because our main supply line is still out and they’re working on that right now.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The flood has forced the residents to adapt.  Many, like Joe and Johanna Barthal have taken up residence in local hotels.

“It is stressful yeah. I mean in your early ages, maybe it’s not so hard,” said Joe. “But to us, you’re knocked out of your house, and no vehicle to drive.”

The Barthals and their 133 fellow residents hope to get home soon, but with water pipes still under repair, they’re forced to sit and wait.

Schellhorn isn’t optimistic the residents will get back home this week.

“Could possibly be as early as next week, we’re crossing our fingers, hoping all the parts come in and we can get everything together and come back home.”

But as they wait for a return to normalcy, people like the Joe Barthal are just grateful for what they have.

“You know what, we have one another. we have each other, nobody was hurt. it’s damage that can be replaced.”
