Saskatchewan Huskies looking solid at midway point of season

Watch above: Huskies pleased with record, not satisfied with play

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies have hit the road twice in 2014, both times returning to Saskatoon with a win. Neither time however has the team been satisfied with the way they got the ‘W’.

“We’re pleased with the record but not satisfied with our play, our preparation and our performance. I think we can be better,” admits Huskies head coach Brian Towriss.

Huskies starting quarterback Drew Burko agrees.

“In those games we didn’t play to the standard we did at home. Last game we made a lot of mistakes, a lot of penalties that held us back and we just need to be better going on the road.”

With two road wins to go along with a 1-1 record at home, the Huskies are off to a nice 3-1 start to the season.

Add on the fact that the previously undefeated Calgary Dinos forfeited their season opening win to Alberta on Monday because of ineligible player, and the Huskies find themselves with an identical record as the first place Dinos.

“Doesn’t change us a bit,” said Towriss. “All we can control is who we play this week. If it benefited anybody it was Alberta.”

The Huskies are currently in line for a home playoff spot with half the season go.

Because of the Dinos forfeit, first place is also a possibility as well, but that’s nothing the Dogs are concerning themselves with right now.

“Calgary still beat us, so they can still get to 7-1. We’re not worried about that right now,” stresses Towriss.

“We want to get to 4-1 and that’s the number one issue right now in our mind.”

The Huskies try to keep pace with the Dinos Saturday night, and win their fourth game of the season, when they host the 1-3 UBC Thunderbirds at Griffiths Stadium in the Annual “Blackout Game.”
