FREDERICTON – Full-time academic staff at the University of New Brunswick have been awarded a 12.5 per cent wage increase over three years.
The increase was determined by an arbitrator appointed earlier this year following a strike that lasted several weeks.
Classes were cancelled after picket lines went up at campuses in Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton and Bathurst on Jan 13.
A tentative settlement was reached on January 30th with the help of a mediator, but wages remained an outstanding issue.
That’s when an arbitrator was called in to making a binding decision.
The Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers says it’s pleased with the award.
But the university’s representative on the three-member arbitration board has issued a dissenting statement.
Richard Petrie says the arbitrator’s award is not justified by the evidence and is unreasonable high.
