SkyTrain resumes full service following switch problem

VANCOUVER – It was another frustrating rush hour commute for SkyTrain passengers on Tuesday evening.

Around 6 p.m. there was a system-wide hold on the Expo and Millennium lines due to a switch problem at Metrotown and Royal Oak stations, but some trains started running after a short delay.

Trains were running on the Expo Line from Waterfront Station to Nanaimo Station and from Edmonds to King George stations but a bus bridge had to be set up between Joyce and Edmonds. Commuters reported on social media that platforms were really crowded and there was very little information from Translink.

Trains started running between Joyce and Edmonds at 9:48 p.m.

The Millennium Line and Canada Line was not affected.

Translink says the problem has been isolated to a less than one-year-old faulty modem at Metrotown station.

As it is still under warranty, the supplier of the modem will do some analysis of the premature failure.

In July, SkyTrain was down for about five hours due to a circuit board short. People had to leave the train cars and walk along the tracks back to the station, but Translink says the issue was “exacerbated by passengers who illegally walked onto [the] guideway.”
