Free pop-up shop to open Saturday at Old Market Square

WINNIPEG – Pop-up shops have been gaining popularity in Winnipeg, but on Saturday a different kind of pop-up shop will take shape in Old Market Square.

The Street Store will be outdoors and the items will be completely free of charge. The one-day event will have an assortment of winter coats, boots, blankets and clothing for those who are homeless or under-resourced.

The concept started in Africa and has spread across the world.

“It’s an event that is on a global scale at this point. It’s taken shape here over the last month,” said Desmond Caza, one of the organizers.

The square will not only be full of winter gear but also live entertainment and snacks.

“It’s allowing people to see there’s a need for this, and it’s letting people feel like a bigger part of the community,” said Caza.

The Street Store is a collaboration between Siloam Mission and the Winnipeg Freestyle Group. Organizers are hoping the event raises awareness of homelessness.

“I feel like when it comes to the education about clothing and what people need in Winnipeg, any publicity it gets is amazing,” said Laura Everett at Siloam.

People are encouraged to bring items to Siloam or right to the square on Saturday.
