Less than a month after announcing passengers would have to pay a fee for their first checked bag, Air Canada has started cracking down on the size of carry-on luggage.
The airline says the move will ensure over-sized bags are checked.
Aviation analyst Rick Erickson says he isn’t surprised by the move.
“It was about three or four years ago now that European low class carriers stared this policy and the first thing that passengers did was bulk up on their carry-on”, says Erickson.
Passengers like Herold Perveseff don’t want to pay, if they don’t have to.
“I’m going to try to repack”, says Perveseff. “I’ll probably put some more clothes on, maybe another sweater and a pair of pants”, he adads.
Other passengers are glad size restrictions are being enforced.
Bill Thwaiths says “already just with what people are bringing on board now, they’re just jamming the lockers over your head. It’s going to get worse.”
Still others, like Mike Goldhart, wonder if it’s just a cash grab by forcing more people to check their bags.
“I understand they need to make profit but at the end of the day at this point in time it’s infuriating, actually.”
A $25 fee for checked bags goes into effect November 2nd.
