Price check: Walmart still cheapest versus Target, Loblaw

Target is taking fresh aim at Canadian shoppers this fall, revamping stores and offering better prices on a selection of goods, according to at least one price comparison.

Kantar Retail, a U.S.-based consultancy said earlier this month its head-to-head price check on 33 grocery and health products between Target and Walmart Canada showed the former’s net price for the basket was 3.9 per cent cheaper.

We followed up with our own price comparison – and the results differed sharply on a basket of 10 everyday goods found at each department chain. We went a step further to compare the same products at a Loblaw Real Canadian Superstore.

The result? Target’s price for the basket was more than 10 per cent higher than at Walmart, and was higher than Superstore, as well.
