VANCOUVER – A warning today for anglers out hoping to catch their limit of salmon before the season ends.
The Vancouver Harbour Master says too many small boats are cramming into the mouth of the Capilano River directly in the middle of the shipping lanes.
Seventy-five small vessels were counted on Sunday alone and many were drifting under the Lions Gate Bridge, which is an area prohibited for fishing.
It is also in the middle of the path for freighters.
“My concern is not with the safety of the deep sea vessels transiting that area,” said Chris Wellstood, Vancouver Harbour Master. “My concern is with the safety of the recreational boaters. Because a deep sea vessel will try to make evasive maneuvers, but if it doesn’t have anywhere to go it, it will just stay on its course and will most likely run over a little recreational vessel.”
“Which will turn into a search and rescue mission and even a life or death situation.”
