Police respond to fiery rollover in Penbrooke Meadows

CALGARY- A spectacular rollover crash early Sunday morning sparked a car fire, and forced a number of people from their southeast home.

Police responded to an address on Penbrooke Drive after a driver lost control of his vehicle.

The car slammed through a fence, rolled and came to a stop in the driveway of a duplex, before catching fire with the driver trapped inside.

Joe Lao who lives in the duplex said it was a scary way to be woken up but it could have been worse.

“Absolutely feel lucky that my friend staying in the living room heard it hit straight into the wall,” Lao said. “After a while the fire went up one meter high and reached the balconies.”

An officer at the scene rescued the driver and dragged him across the street before racing to evacuate nearby residences.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and officers used fire extinguishers to attempt to put out the flames as they waited for firefighters.

The male driver was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and say charges are pending.

Another resident in the duplex, Ngoc Chac said they didn’t realize it was a car crash that happened.

“We thought it was a robbery, he banged so hard (on the driveway) we thought to just keep quiet and turn out the light,” Chac said.

Residents were allowed back into their home after about an hour.
