TORONTO — Actor Will Arnett was back in his hometown Saturday night to host Laughter is the Best Medicine II, a gala fundraiser for the Toronto East General Hospital.

But before stepping in front of hundreds of guests inside the Allstream Centre, the Arrested Development star admitted the name of the event worries him.

“It concerns me that this seems to be the line that they’re taking at a hospital — that laughter is the best medicine,” Arnett told Global News.

“I’m curious to see what their emergency room looks like. It’s got to be a disaster.”

Arnett conceded that although it’s probably not sound medical advice, there is truth to the adage.

“To do a fundraiser for the hospital where they deal with such serious issues, but to give it such a positive spin, is great,” he said.

“It’s a great facility that does so many great things for a community that really needs it.”

Headlining the gala is comedian and actor Chris Rock.

“Chris is such a funny guy and I’m so happy that he can do this,” said Arnett.

The 44-year-old star of The Millers said he loves returning to the city where he was born and raised.

“It feels great,” he said. “It means I get to spend time with my folks and bring my kids so they can see the grandparents and the cousins and everybody can fall back in the same old things that they do — argue, and cut each other off.”

Arnett has sons Archibald, 5, and Abel, 4, from his marriage to actress Amy Poehler. She accompanied him to the first Laughter is the Best Medicine gala in 2012 — only weeks before they separated.

Being back in Toronto also allows Arnett to spend time with his beloved Maple Leafs. He’s got “high hopes” for the team this season.

“We’ve got a genius at the top now so I think we’re in good shape,” said Arnett, who joked that fans might not know how to handle a Stanley Cup win by the Leafs.

“Imagine having not won a Cup in so long. What’s going to happen when they finally do? We’re going to burn this city to the ground, right?”

And Arnett is willing to do his part to help the Leafs.

“I never go on the ice but I’m wearing a full uniform and I just keep things light on the bench.”
