Calgary Transit beefing up nighttime security

CALGARY – Transit officials are committing an additional 8 officers to patrol Calgary’s LRT at night.

It’s an effort to lessen any public fears about taking transit late at night or early in the morning.

Four teams of two officers will be on a night shift from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

They will focus on hot spots downtown, at older stations, and near busy shopping malls.

They’ll also make an effort to patrol the U of C, as well as Heritage and Anderson stations.

The goal is to be as visible on the train as possible, with an emphasis on preventing crime before it happens.

“Our patrol strategies have sort of been driven by customer demand, so we had a very reactive style,” says Brian Whitelaw, co-ordinator of public safety and enforcement with Calgary Transit.

“We’re in a position now with the number of the personnel that we have that we’re trying to change that. So we can actually proactively address issues before a customer has to give us a call.”

Calgary transit will also add more resources to the bus lines, in hopes it will help increase ridership.

The changes will take affect October 20th.
