LAKE COUNTRY — After a tough loss, a pair of bear cubs is getting a second chance.
The cubs were rescued Thursday after their mother was killed in the Coldstream area. According to conservation officers, the mother bear had become acclimatized to humans and showed no sign of fear so she was destroyed.
“There’s always something new every day,” says Dr. Linda Kaplan, Tri Lake Animal Hospital owner. In her 22 years at the veterinary clinic she’s never seen baby bears come through the door.
But this isn’t the first time the animal hospital has made headlines for an unusual patient. Last May it helped nurse back to help a newborn fawn, ‘Jane Doe’ orphaned just hours after she was born.

As for the two cubs, Dr. Kaplan says they appear to be in pretty good health with some minor injuries after falling from the tree. One cub needed stitches to sew up a cut on her wrist and both had some scrapes and cuts from the fall.
Now they’re heading to Critter Care in Langley for rehabilitation. Dr. Kaplan says they don’t seem to be acclimatized to humans the way their mother was. If all goes as planned the cubs will released back into the wild next spring.
