TORONTO – An unfortunate mistake by a cleaning crew has left several high school football players with severe burns.
Last week, football coaches at Springbrook High in Montgomery County, Maryland suspected one of their players had a staph infection. A deep cleaning of the locker rooms was ordered.
And that’s when the problem happened.
Workers used a powerful disinfectant on the walls, floors, equipment and even the players’ pads and helmets.
When the athletes were once again permitted back in the facility, some suffered first and second degree chest and back burns.
“Worst pain I’ve ever been in my life,” said student Matthew Robinson, who’s been forced to sit on the sidelines for the remainder of the year. “It should never have happened.”
Some parents are outraged that a powerful chemical was used during the cleaning.
The school’s principal sent a letter home to parents to apologize for the incident and also claimed the school will take extra steps to provide further training for the custodians.
