CALGARY – Police were able to reunite a three-year-old boy with his parents after he was found walking alone through Coventry Hills, early Friday morning.
A man driving to work spotted the toddler near the intersection of Coventry Drive and Coverton Gate N.E. just after 5 a.m.
The Good Samaritan pulled over and welcomed the boy – who was wearing nothing but a onesie — into his truck to keep warm.
Dozens of officers rushed to the scene and began knocking on doors, trying to find the boy’s home.
“After questioning the boy, we learned that his mom worked at a Home Depot,” explains Sgt. Todd Rolfson with the Calgary Police Service. “We were able to talk to the crew there, and through the process of elimination, come to learn the mom’s first name and a phone number.”
Police were eventually able to locate the house where the boy lived, and wake his sleeping family.
“The parents were distraught of course,” adds Sgt. Rolfson. “But so very glad that their son was safe.”
The family has indicated the boy has a habit of escaping from his crib.
“Normally though, he goes into their bedroom and sleeps with them… but in this instance, somehow he got out the front door and just started walking through the neighbourhood.”
Police say the boy was a little cold and a little distraught at first, but started talking with police more once he felt more at ease.
At this point, it’s not believed any charges will be laid.
“We’ve been in their home, and it just seems like a great family,” adds Sgt. Rolfson. “I just think it was a one-off, and I don’t think it’s going to happen again. They were pretty concerned.”
