TORONTO – When he isn’t busy saving lives, this ambulance driver spends his day feeding scores of cats that have been abandoned due to the Syrian civil war in Aleppo.

Alaa, who has been feeding and taking care of the animals for over two months, says he spends about $4 of his savings daily on meat to feed over 150 stray cats in his neigbourhood of Masaken Hanano in Aleppo, a district that has been almost entirely abandoned due to shelling.

Many on social media shared the images of Alaa feeding the felines, praising the man for his actions:

Since July 2012, Aleppo—Syria’s largest city—has been at the core of some of the fiercest fighting.
