WATCH: Wine is Focus of New Okanagan College Lab

It’s the kind of curriculum that makes going back to college sound appealing.

Imagine taking a post-secondary program where drinking wine is not only required, it’s encouraged.

A brand new wine sensory lab has just opened at the Penticton campus of Okanagan college where the lessons will centre around what the Okanagan is famous for–wine.

“The history of Okanagan wine, how to taste wine properly, how to pair up food and wine,” says college President Jim Hamilton.

The new lab was celebrated at the South Okanagan campus Wednesday evening with the official grand opening.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“What this does is allows us to expand our repertoire of our wine and food courses,” says Hamilton.

The facility includes proper storage for wine and even a kitchen to allow students to learn the art of food and wine pairings.

But the new lab will not just be used by college students, it will also cater to the public and enhance the Okanagan’s already strong wine and food industry.

“A whole host of people we hope we will come here from across Canada and beyond to experience Okanagan food and wine so this is a wonderful facility because you can taste wine and you can experience food paired with the wines in a truly world class facility,’ says Hamilton.

The state of the art lab will also come in handy for various wine industry events.

It’s already been reserved by the Okanagan Wine Festival Society as the judging site for the 2015 BC Wine Awards.

The bulk of the $480,000 lab was paid for by the BC Wine Information Society.

The Jim Pattison Foundation also contributed to the project.
