WINNIPEG – A woman is dead and her husband is charged with second-degree murder after she was badly beaten last weekend.
Jenna Marsden, 27, died in hospital on Tuesday after she was critically injured on the weekend, allegedly by her common-law husband, Winnipeg police said in a news release.
Marsden, her common-law husband, Erwin John Spence, 25, and their two children were visiting family on Burnell Street in the West End on Saturday and spent the night there, police said.
During the night, Marsden and Spence got in an argument that escalated until Spence assaulted Marsden, severely injuring her, police allege.
Marsden was taken to hospital by paramedics who were called to the Burnell Street home at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Police were called to the hospital, where they arrested Spence without incident, the news release said.
Spence was charged with aggravated assault and taken into custody. His charge has since been upgraded to second-degree murder.
The death is Winnipeg’s 19th homicide of 2014.
