TORONTO – Late Wednesday night, the 17th named storm of the season formed in the Pacific Ocean.

Tropical Storm Rachel is located about 735 kilometres south of the southern tip of Baja California.

The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h, isn’t expected to strengthen into a hurricane. Rachel is moving west-northwestward at 20 km/h and is expected to continue on that path for the next two days. However, current forecasts anticipate that the storm will gradually turn to the east, where it may affect Baja California as a tropical depression.

Parts of the peninsula were devastated by Hurricane Odile, which made landfall on Sept. 15 as a Category 3 storm.
