PENCTICTON, B.C. — It’s a small bit of closure for a young Penticton woman, the victim of a sexual assault in August of 2013. The man who committed the brutal act, Darren MacDonald, 42, was sentenced Tuesday to six and a half years behind bars.

The attack happened in a remote area east of Penticton. MacDonald passed out after ingesting medication following the assault. His overdose gave the 19-year-old victim time to free herself and drive for help.

The victim spoke with Global Okanagan News last September and described what life has been like since the attack. “I’m constantly looking over my shoulder. I don’t talk to very many people. I don’t go out as much as I used to. I can’t sleep half the time because I have nightmares that he’s standing over me or watching me,” she said.

Along with the prison time, MacDonald was handed a lifetime weapons ban and has been placed on the sexual offender list.
