More than 7,000 firefighters in better-than-expected conditions managed to extend their lines Tuesday around a huge and unwieldy wildfire that has threatened thousands of homes for well over a week and fouled the air in two states.

Authorities say the wildfire is now 35 per cent contained.

It is believed the fire was deliberately set on September 13 and has destroyed at least 12 homes and 57 outbuildings.

Local resident Doug Mudgett returned to the foundation of his lost home, and admitted that seeing it was emotionally difficult.

“I wasn’t composed a half hour ago. It comes in waves,” he said.
