Children at Silverdale Elementary return to class in middle of construction site

Students in B.C. may be back in class this week, but it doesn’t mean business as usual for everybody.

Students at Silverdale Elementary, a small school in Mission, have started off their year on a construction site.

The building envelope remediation project started June 15, right after school shut down for the strike, and it won’t be wrapped up for five weeks.

Parent Courtney Cardy says staff members have told her mold is still inside the walls.

“This is a joke. This shouldn’t be happening when our kids are in school,” she said.

Wayne Jefferson of the Mission School District says he hasn’t received any reports of mold, and Worksafe BC has signed off on the site.

As a precaution the district will be doing an air quality check and bring in extra cleaning crews.
