Calendar says fall, temperature says summer in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – It’s the first day of autumn and Winnipeggers are donning their shorts and T-shirts.

The temperature in Winnipeg Tuesday afternoon was 26 C, a full 10 degrees above normal. The temperature is forecast to reach as high as 31 C on Thursday.

“Its unbelievable, eh? It should be the first day of summer,” Don Kjear said Tuesday, while he walked with his granddaughter at Kildonan Park.

Many people wearing summer clothes said they had to dig out the shorts after storing them weeks ago for the winter.

Courtenay Reedman Parker, on a family walk at Kildonan Park, said she is taking in every last bit of the warm weather.

“We had such an unpleasant spring and summer, so it’s great to take advantage of early fall weather.”

There were only 34 days this summer when temperatures reached above 26 C, considered a normal temperature for a typical Winnipeg summer day.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

When temperatures dipped a few weeks ago, many local businesses that rely on good weather started closing up shop.

Bob Smith from Cool Encounters was considering closing the Gateway Road ice cream bar for the season.

“I can’t say I didn’t think of it, that’s for sure.”

But once the mercury hit the mid-20s, he asked staff to return.

“I was calling my people. It was slow, and now you need two or three people in there now all of a sudden,” Smith said Tuesday.

At Shooters Golf Course, their phone was ringing off the hook once people saw how nice it would be outdoors.

Owner Gueido Cerasani said their crew was shifted to a fall schedule despite an influx in golfers to the course.

“Our staff is reduced because you know, it’s the fall and we adjust for the seasonal flow,” he said.

“We are dependent on the weather — when the weather’s great we’re great, and when the weather sucks, we suck.”

Shortened staff didn’t bother golfers, who were happy to be back on the links to kick off fall.

“It’s beautiful. I wish this was the first day of summer, but I’ll take it. It’s outstanding,” Larry Ferniuk said.
