EDMONTON – STARS Air Ambulances from both Edmonton and Calgary were dispatched to the scene of a rollover on Highway 2 late Monday afternoon.

It happened just north of Ponoka, around Township Road 435, shortly before 5 p.m.

Emergency crews arrived to find the southbound vehicle in the centre ditch.

“There [were] seven people in total in the vehicle, some were ejected, some were still in the vehicle upon arrival,” said Sheriff Sgt. Nathan Kardish of Ponoka Integrated Traffic Services.

The driver and one of the passengers — both men believed to be in their early 20s — were airlifted to Edmonton hospital via STARS in critical condition.

The other passengers were transported via ground ambulances to Ponoka for observation.

Traffic was heavily backed up in the area as a result of the crash; northbound lanes were shut down for about two hours and southbound lanes were reduced to one lane. Both have since reopened.
