WATCH: A family in B.C. is reeling after their 17-year-old daughter was murdered in what appears to be a random attack. Robin Gill has the story.
A fundraising page has been set up to honour the memory of a Surrey teenager who was killed on her way home last week.
The body of 17-year-old Serena Vermeersch was found last Tuesday night near train tracks on 146th Street and 66th Avenue in Surrey.
Police say she was last seen getting onto a transit bus on the corner of 64th Avenue and 128th Street at approximately 8:10 p.m. Monday. She was headed home.
Investigators said this was a random, and not a targeted attack.
A convicted sex offender, who was at high risk to re-offend when he was released from jail in June 2013, has now been charged in her death.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has not released the identity of the man charged in Vermeersch’s death, but Global News has learned the man is Raymond Caissie.
Caissie, 43, has a history of violent sexual crimes.
Sgt. Jennifer Pound of IHIT read a statement on behalf of Serena’s family, that says they are receiving the support and care they need during this difficult time, but they will not be making any further statements.
In a statement to Global News, the family says, “there is cautious relief that an arrest has been made. There will be no closure until sentencing.”
