UPDATE: Semi hits and kills pedestrian in Summerland

UPDATE: Police confirm the victim was a 77 year-old Summerland resident. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The highway has since re-opened to traffic in both directions. 

SUMMERLAND — The coroner is at the scene of a motor vehicle incident involving a pedestrian and semi in Summerland.

The semi struck the pedestrian as the victim crossed Highway 97 near Sumac Winery at around 10 a.m. Monday.

The victim is said to be a male in his late 60’s or early 70’s and is believed to be a resident of Summerland.

The incident closed the highway during the investigation but a detour was set up at Steuart Road to accommodate traffic.

There is no crosswalk where the collision happened.

The driver of the semi is in shock but otherwise okay.

Road conditions were dry at the time.
