Spallumcheen home burns down to foundation

Aftermath of fire on Demorest Road. submitted

ARMSTRONG – A Spallumcheen home burned to the ground but fire crews were able to stop the blaze from spreading into nearby trees.

The Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department was called to the blaze on Demorest Road just before 7:00 pm Sunday evening.

“Unfortunately, the structure was a total loss but by the time we got there it was written off anyway,” says fire chief Ian Cummings.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Cummings says the home was difficult to access on a rough fairly narrow dirt road.

Armstrong Spallumcheen crews were supported by the BX Swan Lake Fire Department who brought in tanks of water.

“There [are] no hydrants up there so we needed a lot of water. We wanted to keep the fire contained to the structure itself and keep it out of the trees,” says Cummings.

The Wildfire Management Branch was also called in.

Cummings says crews stayed at the scene until around 4:00 am and will be going back again today because the home’s foundation is still smoldering.

He doesn’t know at this point how the blaze started.
