HALIFAX – Heavy rain and high winds knocked out power across Nova Scotia Monday, prompting schools, businesses and roads to close.

At one point, more than 48,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were without power, but that number dropped to about 7,400 as of 11:00 a.m.

The Halifax Regional School Board has closed a number of its schools because of the outages and some businesses in the city also shut down.

Halifax police redirected traffic in a couple of areas because of a downed power line in the neighbourhood of Clayton Park and a branch that became entangled in another power line in the city’s north end.

Rainfall warnings were issued for much of the province and Environment Canada warned that flooding in low-lying areas was possible.
