B.C. students getting ready to go back to school on Monday

VANCOUVER – Shoppers are expected to be out in droves this weekend across B.C., stocking up on school supplies.

They are gearing up for classes to finally be in session at public elementary and high schools on Monday after B.C. teachers ratified a new contract earlier this week.

The list of items that students need, or just want, seems to get longer each year.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It now covers all sorts of electronic gadgets, as well as pens and paper.

“It means we can finally start this year and get it over with,” said one student.

With the way last year ended most districts won’t be completely prepared for students to enter the classroom, at least not right away.

“It’s not going to be business as usual,” said Patti Bacchus, chairwoman of the Vancouver school board. “It’s going to take a lot of work and we’re going to ask parents and students to be patient as we try to get classrooms organized, staffing place and timetables adjusted.”
