WINNIPEG – Police say the SUV that sped down a residential street in Winnipeg Wednesday and sparked a terrifying crash was stolen.

The 38 year old man at the wheel, who tried to flee and pulled a knife on bystanders, is in hospital but charges are pending. Police say alcohol was likely a factor in the crash as well.

It happened at about 4 p.m. on Pacific Avenue West in the Weston area. Police say the stolen Ford Escape was going about 80 km/hr eastbound on Pacific, entered the intersection with Cecil Street and T-boned a Chevy Cavalier, which also collided with a parked minivan.

“Then the guy from the black truck got out and he says, ‘I just want to get out of here,’ and two guys said, ‘You’re not going anywhere,’ and then that’s when he pulled the knife out and he’s gonna stab one, and one guy just grabbed him by the wrist, the knife fell out, my driver kicked it across the street,” witness Garth Reimann said.

Reimann said as the driver was being restrained, the man said, “I just want to get the f*** out of here because I’m hammered.”
