Newborn baby rescued during Lethbridge drug investigation

EDMONTON –  A baby boy, who is less than one-month-old, was removed from a vehicle during a drug seizure in Claresholm on September 16. Police believe the newborn was brought along on a suspected drug deal.

The 24-year-old mother – a Lethbridge woman – was arrested by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT). A 17-year-old young offender was also arrested.

Officials also removed nearly $9,000 worth of crack and powder cocaine from the vehicle.

On the evening of September 16, investigators saw behaviour that suggested drug trafficking could be taking place. They decided to stop the investigation early for the sake of the baby’s well-being.

The two suspects were arrested at a vehicle stop in Claresholm.

A total of about 85 grams of cocaine was individually packaged. Other drug-related items were also seized, including digital scales and packaging materials.
