TORONTO – iPhone and iPad users are now able to download iOS 8 – Apple’s newest mobile operating system. But many users are already facing issues installing the new software due to the size of the update.
Shortly after iOS 8 became available for download, many users took to Twitter to complain that they were being forced to delete pictures, videos and other precious files from their devices in order to make space for the update.

“I just literally had to delete every single thing off of my phone for iOS 8,” tweeted one user.
“Deleted every app and photo to get enough room to download iOS 8 and apparently I still don’t have enough room,” said another.
Turns out, iOS 8 requires at least 5.7GB of free space in order to be installed on most iPhone and iPad models.
Previous iOS updates have only required about 1GB of free space.
This becomes an even bigger issue for iPhone 4S or iPhone 5C users who only have 8GB total storage space on their devices.
But, if you are panicking about deleting all of your photos and apps, don’t worry – there is a bit of a workaround.
Instead of installing iOS 8 directly on your device using Wi-Fi, wait until you are able to connect your device to a computer and use iTunes to download and install the new software. This method will still require some free space, but not nearly as much.

This also gives you the opportunity to back up your device to a computer and secure your files – which will be an added bonus if you are still forced to delete some content.
Tip: Users should always back up their device to iCloud or their computer before installing a new operating system, just in case anything goes wrong and data is lost. Apple offers instructions on backing up devices here.
Many users are also reporting long install times for iOS 8 – some saying the process took almost an hour and a half altogether.
