SASKATOON – With the regular season just days away, the Saskatoon Blades have brought in reinforcement between the pipes.

Michael Herringer, 18, arrived in the Bridge City from the Victoria Royals in exchange for a conditional draft pick.

“I’m extremely excited,” said an eager Herringer. “The organization looks amazing from what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen so far since I’ve been here. I’m excited to play hockey.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Herringer had a solid pre-season on the west coast, posting a 1.64 GAA and a .932 save percentage in three games.

He joins Troy Trombley, 20, and Trevor Martin, 18, in a suddenly crowded crease.

When the season begins on Friday it will be Trombley, last year’s starter, in between the pipes. But Martin and Herringer will no doubt be pushing the incumbent.

“Tromz is the guy with all the experience so that definitely gives his a heads up on everybody else,” claimed Blades head coach and general manager Bob Woods.

“(I) thought Martin had a decent pre-season as well and now you have another guy coming in which brings a little more competition and I think it just keeps everyone honest here.”

The Blades added one player on Tuesday and say goodbye to another.

The team released 19-year-old fan favorite Logan Harland. The Frenchman Butte product spent two seasons in Saskatoon, racking up 13 goals and 22 points in 84 games.

The Blades open the season Friday in Prince Albert and host the Raiders the following night at Credit Union Centre.
