WATCH: Teen tackles suspect attempting to escape arrest

TORONTO – Police in the UK are commending a teenager for his “heroic” actions after he tackled a suspect attempting to escape an arrest on a busy street.

In CCTV footage captured in June, 16-year-old Kiya Ingham is seen chasing Bradley Jay Hughes from Brighton and restraining him after the 31-year-old was arrested after an allegation of a domestic related incident.

In the video, two police officers are seen detaining Hughes, who was reportedly intoxicated, in the police car. Officials said that although Hughes was initially “upset but calm,” he became violent shortly after, kicking and pushing the two officers as he began to run away.

Kiya said he was passing by and took interest at what was happening and sat at the bus stop for about 30 seconds.

“Then the man flipped. I dropped my bag, which had my tablet and phone in, and ran after him,” said Ingham in an interview. “I didn’t think, it was just instinct.”

Sussex Police shared the video via their YouTube channel Monday.

Hughes has since been convicted after pleading guilty to two counts of assaulting a police officer and received 100 hours community service.

Meanwhile, for his actions, Ingham received a bravery award.

“The incident shows how difficult and sometimes dangerous policing can be, so we were very grateful and moved that without hesitation he stepped into help the police in such a situation,” said Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, Brighton and Hove Divisional Commander in a release Wednesday.
