TORONTO – CoverGirl responded Monday to Photoshopped ads that went viral showing a model with a black eye.

The altered ads, created by social media users and taken from the beauty brand’s “Get Your Game Face On!” NFL campaign, were in protest of the handling of the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal.

It shows a model sporting Baltimore Ravens colours and a black left eye and was tweeted with the hashtag #GoodellMustGo, #BoycottCoverGirl and #BoycottNFL.

CoverGirl, the official beauty sponsor of the NFL, issued a statement that read: “As a brand that has always supported women and stood for female empowerment, COVERGIRL believes domestic violence is completely unacceptable. We developed our NFL program to celebrate the more than 80 million female football fans.

“In light of recent events, we have encouraged the NFL to take swift action on their path forward to address the issue of domestic violence.”

The brand’s NFL collection features makeup and nail polish in each of the 32 football teams’ colours.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been heavily criticized for his handling of the Rice abuse case.

Rice had been charged with felony aggravated assault, but in May he was accepted into a pretrial intervention program that allowed him to avoid jail time. He was handed a two-game suspension but was cut from the Ravens and suspended by the league indefinitely after TMZ posted video of the NFLer knocking out his then-fiancée Janay Palmer.
