Blood Reserve school graduating more students than ever

The halls of the Kainai High School are filled with hope and promise.

This year’s graduating class is said to be the largest it’s ever been in the school’s history.

Principal Annette Bruised Head said she expects 30 of her 38 students to graduate this year. This is a significant achievement for the school, which in 2009 graduated only three of its 50 students.

She explained the reason for the increase is that students are being held accountable for their work and attendance. “I have three teachers per grade knowing where those students are,” she said.

“We’re tracking them just a little bit closer to make sure they have their attendance, their academics.”

Bruised Head began this new school policy with last year’s class, which proved a dramatic change in student involvement. It was the class of 2014 that set a school record for graduating 25 grade 12 students.

“I believe we all stand on the shoulders of giants and so encouraging our students to see that, so I know our grade 12 students this year are looking at that and saying how can we be better than that.”

For Bruise Head, it’s about more than just promoting academia. “Not only are we affecting our school community, but we have the opportunity to affect our larger community of Kainai, of the Blood Reserve,” she said.
