TORONTO – An Australian veterinarian performed a life-saving procedure on a “much-loved” pet last week — a much-loved goldfish to be exact.

Dr. Tristan Rich of Melbourne’s Lort Smith Animal Hospital removed a large tumour from George’s head after the fish reportedly had difficulties breathing and swimming.

The surgery reportedly cost close to $200.

According to the Daily Mail, George’s owners monitored the growth for some time before bringing it in for a check-up.

According to the animal hospital’s Facebook page, Dr. Tristan put the fish to sleep using anaesthetics and ran a tube from a bucket of water, which was being oxygenated, into George’s mouth so water would continually wash over the fish’s gills.

It took four sutures and some tissue glue to close George back up after the surgery.

He was then reportedly placed in a recovery tank and given pain medication and antibiotics.

According to the hospital, the surgery went well and George is swimming again.
