Woman airlifted to hospital after horse race accident

NEAR WEST KELOWNA — A 120 kilometer ride to the finish in the Central Okanagan came to a crashing halt Saturday morning.

The 2014 BC Endurance Championships, a long distance horse race, hit the trails in West Kelowna but partway into the ride something went terribly wrong.

A woman in her 40’s was thrown off her horse and slammed into a tree near Jackpine Lake. It appears the horse was spooked for some undetermined reason.

The woman was being attended to by other racers until emergency crews arrived. BC Ambulance and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue were called in to save her and emergency crews say she was fading in and out of consciousness during the rescue.

She needed to be transported to Kelowna General Hospital by air ambulance. Emergency crews report she suffered upper body injuries, potentially to her head and chest.
