WINNIPEG – A colourful out-pour of pride showcasing aboriginal culture has taken over MTS Centre.
“As soon as you hear that drum your spirit awakens,” said pow wow participant, Melanie Dean.
Nearly 1,000 dancers took to the floor Saturday for the Manito Ahbee Festival’s grand entry and pow wow.
“It’s a sense of pride, it’s almost as if your spirit comes out and you get a burst of energy that you never thought you had,” said Dean.
From children to elders, men and women, the family friendly event celebrated aboriginal arts, tradition, and heritage.
“It’s great to celebrate our culture, it brings people together, it unifies us as a nation,” said Dean.
The ninth annual event is Canada’s biggest pow wow and the second largest in North America.
After the opening pow wow the day was filled with dance contests including hoop dancing, while others wandered through booths selling aboriginal jewelry, paintings, clothing, and moccasins.
Manito Ahbee continues Sunday with $10 tickets available at the door.
