Pincher Creek man pinned under tree and almost paralyzed

Lethbridge – Paskal Lepine tried to fight back tears as he recalled the day a freak accident nearly left him paralyzed.

“All the surgeons told me to get use to the wheel chair idea because they did not think I would be able to walk,” explains Lepine.

On July 24th Lepine, his wife and daughter decided to go camping to one of their favorite spots near Pincher Creek, Alberta. Lepine says shortly after he arrived he went out to check on the hamburgers. But moments later, he found himself pinned under a 10 foot popular, and falling into the campfire.

“ I honestly thought I was going to die. I looked around at the scenery and I thought, ‘This is the end.’”

Lepine was initially taken to Pincher Creek hospital, but was quickly transferred to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

“At this point I didn’t have much feeling and I was in complete agony,” adds Paskal.

Lepine broke his spine and underwent back surgery. Now, after two months in the hospital, has regained some movement in his lower body.

“Every day I get a little bit stronger and things are looking up.”

Lepine says his wife and the entire community of Pincher Creek have helped him keep it together. Remarkably, Lepine is finally back at home, able to walk, but his recovery is far from over and it will be another six months before he can return to work.
