MUHC’s new cancer centre set to open in June

MONTREAL — Senior officials at McGill University’s teaching hospitals are hoping the future of state-of-the-art cancer care is less than a year away.

The Cedars Cancer Centre will open on the sprawling Glen Yard’s campus in June 2015.

The centre expects to treat 700 patients per day, with 170,000 treatments a year.

“We’re going to be looking in the month of October to receive the keys in order to move in, start the activation process and then be ready for the spring,” MUHC CEO Normand Rinfret said Friday.

The new centre will have a dedicated urgent care centre; an isolation room; healing gardens and a patient resource centre.

All the facilities will be under one roof at the Glen Yards site. Currently many MUHC cancer patients move from hospital to hospital for different types of care and treatments.

“It’s been shown in other jurisdictions where people have regrouped and consolidated, the care has improved,”  said Dr. Armen Aprikian, chief of the MUHC Cancer Care Mission.

“Not only efficiency, but also the quality of care has improved.”

The MUHC currently spends $50 million a year on cancer treatment and Friday it got an extra boost in funding, with $16 million in private donations, including $12 million from Larry Rossy, the founder of Dollarama.

The MUHC team hopes the new cancer centre will put it on par with other leading international cancer institutions.
