Large fire burning on Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack now contained

VANCOUVER – A large fire burning on Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack  is now 100 per cent contained.

It was estimated to be 50 metres by 50 metres in size and was burning a Rank 2, which means a smoky ground with some open flame.

Assistant fire chief with the Abbotsford Police Department, David Rivett, said on Thursday because the fire is on provincial land it is not in their jurisdiction.

“I can confirm there is a fire, and it’s way up near the top of Vedder Mountain and it’s out of our jurisdiction,” he said. “It’s inaccessible to us.”

The fire did not threaten any structures but the Coastal Fire Centre is urging people to be cautious because they responded to three fires on Thursday alone.
