Astronauts return to Earth from International Space Station

TORONTO – Three astronauts who have been living on the International Space Station safely returned to Earth early Thursday morning.

NASA astronaut Steve Swanson and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Artemiev and Alexander Skvortsov landed in Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan at 8:23 a.m. local time (10:23 p.m. EDT Sept. 10).

The astronauts had been part of the station’s Expedition 40. During their time aboard the station, the astronauts orbited Earth more than 2,700 times and travelled more than 115 million kilometres.

With their departure, the station is now home to just three additional astronauts: Russian Max Suraev who is in command, as well Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency.

Another three-person crew will launch on Sept. 25. That crew will include a Russian woman, Elena Serova, who will be only the fourth Russian woman to fly in space.
