Arsonist strikes in north Lethbridge

Lethbridge – A 35-year-old man is facing charges following a garage fire in north Lethbridge.

Crews were called to the blaze in the 700 block of 16 St. North just before 7 p.m. on Sunday.

According to police, a man and woman were socializing, before an argument broke out. At some point, he allegedly set fire to the garage she was inside.

The woman was able to get out unharmed, but flames gutted the garage and destroyed everything inside.

The fire also damaged a neighbouring fence and caused the siding on a home across the alley to melt.

Total damage is pegged at $65,000.

Clarence Carl Martin is charged with multiple counts of arson, as well as uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

Martin is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
