EDMONTON – Many people on their morning commute through south Edmonton hit some traffic snarls Wednesday, thanks to repaving work.
The city shut down 63 Avenue between 99 Street and 104 Street from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for asphalt grinding and paving.
The night closures are scheduled to happen for three nights in a row.
However, many drivers experienced delays well into the morning, and took to social media to vent their frustrations.
Kelly FitzGibbon from the city’s transportation department explained Gateway Boulevard was reduced to two lanes at the 63 Avenue intersection Wednesday morning. FitzGibbon said the same thing will happen on Thursday morning and possibly Friday morning as well.
The milling and grinding required for the project will mean Gateway will be blocked from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on those days.
“We ask people to take a little extra time,” said FitzGibbon.
The entire 63 Avenue project runs until September 20.
The city advises drivers to detour using Whitemud Drive, 51 Avenue or 82 Avenue.
