HALIFAX – Halifax is set to host a world-class tennis event and ticket sales have been so brisk, organizers are opening up more seats for the three-day competition.
Team Canada will take on Colombia Sept. 12-14 in a Davis Cup tie at the Metro Centre.
The winner of the five best-of-five set matches will advance to the World Group for next year.
More then 5,000 tickets have been sold for each day of the competition
“As far as the lower bowl is concerned, we only have single tickets left,” said Gavin Zin, vice-president of professional and national tournaments with Tennis Canada.
“So we’re actually working right now on creating more seats — so just open up and change some of the sight lines.”
The 8th ranked Canadian team, consisting of Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil, Daniel Nestor, and Frank Dancevic, has been in town for the past few days.
Raonic, who is the country’s top men’s player, said he has enjoyed being in Halifax and looks forward to the “rowdy crowd” at the Metro Centre.
“There’s so many events in tennis that sometimes are very hush-hush,” he said.
“When it comes to Davis Cup, I think people can just let go more just because it’s more of a ‘play for pride for the country’ kind of a moment. And we enjoy that kind of stuff; it pumps us up, it gets us going and it makes the difficult moments easier.”
Organizers also believe the event will help grow the sport of tennis on the east coast.
“Hopefully by having this, we’ll get more tennis fans, more kids playing tennis, eventually maybe more tennis courts as well,” said Zin.
