VERNON – Vernon city council has decided against awarding itself a wage increase this year but it has approved a benefit package.
Acting on the recommendations of a citizen’s committee, the mayor and councillors will for the first time get benefits including health and dental coverage.
The committee didn’t suggest a pay hike.
The Vernon mayor, Rob Sawatzky, says having benefits may help attract more quality candidates during municipal elections.
However, councillor Bob Spiers voted against the motion saying it could cost taxpayers an extra $40,000 annually.
Sawatzky says it’s more likely about $25,000.
