WATCH: Kansas newsroom receives phone call from police shooting suspect

TORONTO – A local newsroom in Topeka, Kansas became the centre of a manhunt for a suspect who shot and killed a police officer Sunday night after receiving a call from the suspect.

Reporter Melissa Brunner was working in the WIBW newsroom when she received a call from a man identifying himself as Ross Lane, one of two men wanted in connection with the death of Topeka officer Jason Harwood.

WIBW filmed the incident with Brunner speaking on two phones simultaneously with both police and the caller.

“What can I do to help you turn yourself in unhurt, is that what you want to do?” Brunner asked the man over the phone.

Lane reportedly told Brunner he didn’t “want to become another Tiscareño,” a reference to David Tiscareno who killed two officers in 2012 and was later killed following a police standoff.

“He is unarmed and he wants to surrender peacefully,” Brunner told police, before switching phones to ask Lane what he is wearing.

Police later took Lane into custody without incident Sunday evening.

Harwood was a 15-year police veteran and leaves behind a wife and two children.
